Winston Sussens is a photographer based in Berlin, working internationally.
A fascination with music and pop culture grew into a love affair with fashion magazines, inspiring him to stage shoots at just 12 years old. Photography began as a way to reflect the beauty he saw in others - roots that evolved into a broader goal: visual elevation of whoever steps in front of his lens, through understanding and building on their visual identity.
Growing up with the diverse landscapes of South Africa, environment remains foundational to his inspiration and image-making, be that an existing setting or one intentionally crafted. With a sharp eye for detail and a purposeful use of colour, Winston constructs an elevated reality: a refined space between the real and the aspirational.
Subtle juxtapositions - contrast and harmony coexisting - are often woven through Winston’s work. A subject can both stand out and blend harmoniously with their exterior. One or the other may not be apparent until a deeper look reveals the juxtaposition as an embodiment of quiet confidence: belonging forged through owning the power of standing out.
Winston continues to live out his 12-year-old self’s wildest dreams, while pushing toward what’s next.
